Scirocco Register

My temperature gauge has recently stopped working, I thought it must be a faulty sensor. Previously I have tested the gauge on other cars by earthing the wire that goes to the sensor and this would make the gauge rise, but on my Rocco earthing this wire does nothing.

Is this not the way to test the gauge on a Rocco? Or would this indicate that the sensor is not the fault?

which sensor did you try?

The one on the end of the head and the one near the dip stick.

Which one is it?, the gauge light flashs at first then goes out, but the gauge doesn't move.

The one on the end of the head above the gearbox is the low oil pressure sender.

The one near the dipstick - presumably you mean one on the oil filter housing - is the oil temperature sender.

The coolant temperature sender is usually on the flange on the front of the head where the top radiator hose goes to, although on some cars it may be situated in a coolant flange on the end of the head .

There are 3 connectors on the flange, 2 top, 1 bottom.

I really need to get a Haynes manual, all these little question could have so easily been answered for me, but then where is the sense of community it that

If its the flange on the front of the head, the white/yellow one with 2 pin connection is the coolant temperature sender. The red one with 2 pin is the run on cut off jobbie from the pierburg carb. The one with a circular thing on that a spade connector clips to is the switch for the coolant temp light in the dash. These were right for my 1.6GT, but may of course be different for yours, but i hope that helps you work it out!

Chanaged the sensor, still don't work :(

I tested the gauge after removal and it does work. Must be wiring

Hi have just bought i scala f reg 89. Im new to the rocco having owned several mk2 golfs and a mk1 cabby. I have just gone over the car and found the temp gauge and fuel gauge doesn;t work. I have tried earthing the temp sender wire on the coolant flange and the gauge doesn't move. I noticed that the fuse box is damp to and suspect the wiring may be faulty from the sensor to the box so i will check this out. I will keep you all posted on this.

Hi all. sorry for not introducing myself!! Im matt im 34 and live in Tamworth staffs. Im a mechanic at ventura park vw there.
I;ve just joined here as i am now the proud owner of an freg 89 scala in blue. I have had the car for three days now but have not really had the chance to go over it properly. I would be gratefull for any advice on here, i have a faire knowledge of vw's working on them on a daily bases but really would appriciate you superior knowledge on the rocco!!

Back again after testing the wiring to the temp sender on top of the flange at the front of the head. The wire has continuity to the fuse box. I have cleaned the conectors in the fuse box also. The temperature gauge is still not working or the led that flashes when the ignition is on. The fuel gauge is also not working. I am thinking it may be the printed circuit on the dash panal. A friend of mine mentioned a voltage regulator on these that can play up. I would be very very grateful for any advice people can throw my way as its drivingh me mad!!!!

Hello all. Thanks very much for the advice you guys have given me. I had another look today after work and took the clocks out, i checked the voltage from the voltage regulator on the back of the clocks and found the reading too high 11.2 volts. Anything higher than 10.5 means the unit is defective. I replaced the voltage reg which is still available from vw and hey presto the fuel and temp gauge are working!! To say im chuffed is an under statment!! I hope this is usefull to people experiancing the same problem.
