Oils and other lubricants (ooh er)

Yet another post, sorry....

I need to do an oil change this weekend, and up till now I've been using the 15W/40 high mileage GTX stuff that Halfords sell. Or at least used to sell - they've stopped doing it now, and I'm trying to work out what to use instead.

The VW dealer in Bristol claim they no longer sell Quantum, which is a bit of a shocker - they exclusively sell Castrol now, at an exorbitant price. However Halfords do a 15W/40 Magnatec at 4L for £17.59, which sounds a good deal - maybe a little too good, in fact. Is it any good?

Also after some gearbox oil, and up till now I've used Quantum, but as above, VW don't sell it any more, so what's the best bet there?

And finally (you'll be glad to see) given the fact that I've popped some ATF in I'm expecting to need more oil than previously to fill up again, so will 4L be enough or should I get an extra litre to be on the safe side? I forget the capacity of the 1.8 sump.

Hopefully this'll be the last set of questions for a while... Although given the fact that I own a Scirocco, I doubt it

ive been using 10/40 magnatec but if you do have a high mileage engine then sticking to 15/40 sounds a good idea.

It's done 147k... Undecided as to whether that's high mileage or just run in on a VW :D

Since the Quantum stuff got harder to get, I've been using 10/40 Fuchs semi synthetic from GSF on some of my cars.

Vwspares.co.uk still to the quantum synta stuff. if you buy 2 or 3 at a time, the postage cost is pretty low. I've also been buying this.

Ok, thanks Mike. Notice any difference between Fuchs and Quantum? Haven't checked yet, but what's the equivalent to the Quantum Hypoid?

Bah, GSF are out of Fuchs at the moment, and I need to do this tomorrow, so Magnatec it is. Mike, would you recommend 10w or 15w on an engine just shy of 150k?

I wouldn't put GTX in a lawnmower, unless I wanted to make smokescreens with it.

As for 10/40 vs 15/40, I think the manual specifies 10/40, so I'd use that.

Right, got some 10W/40 Magnatec... It'll do for now, I'll change it for Quantum in about six months' time. It shouldn't smoke too much with any luck - the 15W/40 that was in there has been fine for the last year. Fingers crossed...

1 x Quantum Synta 5-Litre (In Stock) (ZGB115QLB004) = £14.95
