Right, query.

I've always ran the 16v on 10w40 as recommended. However over the last few hundred miles the engine has started to get quite tappety and rattley. If I swap to a 15w40 oil will that quieten it down a bit until I get chance to investigate further and consider a rebuild?

two edge sword doing this, n one hand yes i mite well quiet en it down if its just a case of wear. on the other hand if you have a problem ie a blockage then putting thicker oil in will just make matters worse.

I'd run a litre of ATF in the oil for a couple of hundred gentle miles, then do an oil change. The detergents in the ATF should help to clean out the oil system.

I wouldn't use 15/40 in a hydraulic tappet engine, except as a temporary measure when you've got known low oil pressure and are trying to nurse it along a bit.

Transmission fluid?!

I'm in the process of doing what Mike suggests. I'm changing the oil tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Haven't had a chance to do the oil change yet! Only done 125 miles since putting the atf in, but I'm going to do this tonight. Even with the original oil still in, the lifters are noticeably quieter.

SWeet, i'll grab a bottle in the morning and see how I get on with it.

See my other post in this topic for a bit more info - didn't work as well as I hoped, but didn't destroy the engine either, and I do reckon the oil that came out was significantly darker than usual. Can only be a good thing!

I have a feeling the long term solution will be a head rebuild..I've stuck some ATF in this morning..Only done 30 miles since then but it still sounds as rattley as ever before..I have noticed i'm leaving a little puddle everywhere I park up recently as well...
