this may be completely normal but maybe not;
My 1985 1.6 gt has a 4+E gearbox (at least thats what the gearknob says) and 1st is a pain in the bum to get and 1-3-5 all feel WAY too close together, is that a problem with the box, or maybe just the shift linkage? ideas anyone?
i've had a fair few 80's motors now and i know the boxes are as a rule slightly looser than 90-'00 cars but this is worse than any i've had before

if anyone can help please post or pm

Cheers

Well worth having a look at the linkage from under the car - it's easy to get to with the front left jacked up. Excessive play can be sorted out by fitting a bush kit - available from GSF for a few quid.

The issue with the gears being too close together sounds a bit odd - try changing the bushes and see how it behaves after that.

nope, the up-down is still a good 6-7" but the side to side 1-3-5 is less than 2" total and 3 is REALLY hard to find
