abf lump

i have got hold of a 1997 abf lump and am going to put it in the rocko. ive noticed the gearbox is different and am wondering if i could pull the clutch assembly of the rocko engine and fit it with rocko 020 gearbox to the abf lump?in other words will it fit plus without affecting engine running? ive noticed the engine is taller as stated in the faqs but have soted this with a different custom downpipe.the main reason i wana use the rocko box is its cable operated clutch instead of hydraulic + the abf gearbox is operated by cables instead of rod links.if anyone has any recomendations it would be gladly appreciated.

going on my own research, so please don't quote me on this... but the two boxes are interchangeable with the exception of the rod gear change and cable clutch. Not 100% on the drive shafts or flywheels though, sure somone like MikeH will be able to advise better to be fair :)

It's less hassle to fit the existing gearbox. Fit a new sachs clutch with it, and make sure the flywheel face is in good condition.

If you're driving normally you won't have a problem. If you thrash it senseless the power of the ABF will break it eventually, but then the diffs break anyway, eventually, when the rivets pull out.

02A boxes are heavier, the flywheels are heavier, and they're generally more expensive, as people want them for turbo conversions.

thats sounds fair enough to me. ive got a spare box just incase, but what ile do is recover all the cable linkages and master cylinder for the 02a box if ever i decide to put the whole lot into the rocko sometime in the future as it would be nice to have a hydro clutch and the proper gearbox to go with the engine.

Absolutely keep all the ABF related bits, if they're included in the price you paid - you can always sell what you don't use. Make sure you've got the transponder box to go with the ECU too, as it will be immobilised without that.

What management were you planning to run it on?

If you find yourself tight for cash, flog the whole abf gear box set up,g/box, flywheel, gear stick,clutch slave cyclinder and cables.
The 20vt,g60 boys use these and fetch a pretty pennie.

You'd probably get £150-200 for that lot.

im planning on using what came with the car. ive got the whole car so will be using everything off it that will fit on the rocko, but im trying to keep it simple.

transponder? is that the key code reader usually on the steering column, aka part of the imobiliser?

Yes, as far as I'm aware... it basically picks up the signal from the key fob and passes it to the box of car stopping gubbins.

The sensor ring on the column lock and the transponder box are two separate parts. You need both, although the sensor ring on the column isn't coded to your key. The transponder box is coded to your specific ECU, so you need that specific one.

I haven't stripped one from a Mk3, so I asked a mate.

"its up inside the dash, close to the column and below the clocks. burried pretty deep! follow the wiring from the reader coil around the ign lock and you'll find it"
