4 to 5 speed

hi my mk1 came out of the factory with a 4 speed gearbox...some time later it was changed to a 5 speed. 
but 1st and 2nd are hard to get? how can i tell if the linkages are 4 or 5 speed ones.....and do they use the same gear lever?? thanks stew
