Clicking noise in gear..

Basically i've just been bleeding the brakes, turned the front left (while still in gear, with the other wheel touching the floor) the wheel turns fine and there is a loud clicking noise. Havent been able to check where its coming from yet as i dont have another person to turn the wheel for me while i check.

Any ideas what this could cause such a noise? Will check wheel bearings, CV's, and probs the diff? With the car out of gear the noise goes away.

mine used to do that too. check the gear oil level and if that's ok just ignore it. if you can hear it when you're driving, then you've got something to worry about

I get a grinding kind of noise while im driving... :S

there's a level plug in the side of the g'box. 17mm (iirc) allen bolt. undo that and fill until it pours out. simples

although a grindong noise while you drive isn't a good thing!

Yea thats what my mates just told me. Shall have to get hold of the tool to undo the bolt. Should it turn out to be something in the diff, is it worth even tring to fix it? or just get hold of a new gearbox? (secondhand)

On a side note whats a good price to pay for a gearbox? And is it the same gearbox as found in mk2 gti 8v's?

unless you're planning to completely rebuild it with a quaife diff or something, just bang a 2nd hand one in there. think i paid £30 for the last one i bought. as far as i'm aware, the case is the same on the mk2 golf, but the internals are different (i.e. slightly different ratios) so it should fit. i'm sure someone else will confirm that soon...

Ahh i see. i thought they had the same internals too, close ratio gears etc. Anyway.. should i manage to source a second hand diff was it easy to fit it? (ie any specialist tools?) Aside from the obvious effort of removing the gearbox.

much less hassle to just chuck a different box in

Figured that would probably be an easier way of doing it :P

Are there any good suppliers of recon'd boxes etc? Any recommended ones?

if you crack on with it, you can change the box in under 3 hours. 2nd hand boxes can be picked up for £30. personally i'd buy 2nd hand and just accept that they might be a consumable item
