Mk2 Woes...

Been tinkering this afternoon as am sorting tax out on Monday, so thought I'd better check everything was alright
Put some fresh fuel in, connected the battery, took an age (several attempts; lost count) to start and when he did, had to keep my foot on the gas to stop him from stalling (only did this after a bit, when first started he idled at 1800 rpm then dropped down to 1100 rpm but just kept dropping unless I put the pedal down)
Any ideas on this, thinking the cold start valve as I've got a known issue with that, garage mentioned something about the plug on top needing to be re-wired, I'm not sure...anyone got one kicking about I can have?
Cheers
Jon

Anybody? No-one got a spare cold start or even just the plug off the top?

Rewire it with some extra wire and some small spade connectors. Make sure you insulate them as they are taking power from the same fuse as the fuel pump.

Mine both start fine without a CSV, and have done all winter, and last winter too. Have you checked the resistance of, and voltage to the WUR against the Haynes spec?
I think yours is too old to have a lift pump, but if it does, check that it's running.

Seems to be a bit iffy at the mo, lemme explain....
Got the tax sorted, went to start, just wouldn't catch (not sure why) so turned off and tried again and he fired...
Drove around fine, went home parked up, thought nothing of it
Come to him this afternoon, key in ignition, turned, sounded like the starter motor having trouble getting it going, turned off, tried again same thing, pumped the gas for about 15 secs, caught then died, tried again and fired up no problems....
The battery was stored in the house over winter so think I've got adequate power...
I'm completely at a loss, help me please Scirocco Register, you're my only hope!

Not really enough info but I'd hazard a guess at the timing being slightly too advanced (or set up for high octane and standard grade in the tank) or the fuel pressure being slightly too low especially on starting. Fuel pressure accumulator on that one?

Best I can do in my descriptive terms
Will get a video next time I come to start him and will go from there, am hoping that its just some 'cobwebs' that need blowing out from being sat outside since November...

Try a huge dose of STP fuel injector cleaner. It'll take a while to get through the lines, but if cobwebs need blowing, that'll do it...

Planning to do that when got the money to fill the tank, usually only run about 1/2 full
Something new has appeared mind, coolant tank was full on friday before I went out, drove it friday and yesterday, got in it to come home, coolant light flashing, checked the tank when I got home, 1/2 the tank gone, no visible leaks, no wet areas that I can see, another mystery!

You checked under the oil filler cap?
And the STP cleaner, you want to put that in a nearly empty tank.

Yeah checked under the cap, all's well, hence the mystery...

Hi mate,
I got similar problems, mostly since a new fuel pump and fuel reservoir fitted by the garage. When I try to start her she turns over but won't catch, guys at the garage say it's the fuel pressure but it's been back and forth to the garage for a couple of weeks now with the same problem. When she's running she's fine, think (hoping) it's just a few adjustments that are needed.
Hopefully get it sorted soon!
