i'm told that to renew my struts i just need to replace the shock inserts. Where do i buy them and how much are they and are other performance brands compatible or do i need to stick with original parts? Cheers in advance for your help kids. Any additional related advice is welcome. I'm doing a full bush replacement and changing the springs for lowering ones while i'm at it.

i had 40mm drop on standard inserts and it was a bit harsh but livable with.

there's a world of different inserts out there that will fit some sporty some cheap it just depends how much you're willing to spend.

What sort of prices are we talking? How much would a cheap set be? How much would an original spec set be? How much would a performance set be? Roughly, obviously. Cheers.

Sure you can get them "better" and 60mm drop on the front sounds a bit severe to me, but hey ho

I already have springs and i don't really want to buy complete shock setups - I just want the shock inserts. I don't want to spend money on the bits i already have. Where do i get shock inserts and what's the price range like? Cheers.

Thanks for that. Do you mean £20 to £30 per insert? So around £100 per set? I take it they're performance ones then? Seems expensive.

standard replacement parts are around £20-£30 each - fairly standard price for a damper (actually pretty cheap)

20 to 30 just for one insert is standard price? Then you might as well upgrade to a complete spax set up for 230 rather than go standard. Once you've bought springs you'd be looking at over 200 for standard stuff if the inserts alone cost 30 per corner. I think i'll see what the shocks on my scrapper are like. Buying new just seems too expensive. I've already got the springs and the rest of the shock so hopefully the scrapper's inserts are in good nick. They've not done many miles.

£120 for all corners for decent ones, they list cheaper ones for £20 a corner but the boge ones have a good reputation and are oe on alot of cars.

Zero pounds is still a lot cheaper than 80 pounds never mind 120. I can't imagine there'd be enough of an improvement over the ones on my scrapper to warrant spending that kind of money. Wont get anything good for £50. As long as the old ones are dry and nice and tight they will do. Kust make sure they arent too rusty, ive had the bottom spring plate rust off the main body before

Gaz adjustables with front inserts are £280 a set inc delivery, just so that you can compare the prices to performance dampers.

You don't get inserts for the rear as they only have a tube welded on the bottom and a circlip which supports a spring seat.

Hmmm... rust. Hadn't thought of that. The scrapper's been sat for 2 years. Does that mean i can pretty much guarantee they'll be rusty? I've really opened up a can of worms deciding to upgrade my suspension haven't i? Ha ha.

if you're going for shorter springs it is well worth fitting shorter shocks at the same time - apart from the handling improvement, they will last longer. jamex do a short strut/shock assembly at a reasonable price, and they're shiny and yellow
