Evening all!
Is there any interchange between Golf MK2 and Scirocco 2 front suspension and hub/bearing carriers. Would make brake swops a lot easier. This is way too easy for it not to be mentioned in previous threads?
Just how good/bad is the standard set up? There is no way that I can lock my wheels on my recently aquired 93(Yessss)GT2 and everything seems so slugish it`s just scary !!!!! :shocking:
I had a 1600 MK1 Golf GTI and the brakes on that were OK so I`m rather tempted to keep the system standard and bring everything up to 100% and see if I can live with that. After all, 239mm discs do not seem that small for a car of this weight.
Comments please.

The suspension is all mk1 Golf - mk2 stuff generally not compatible.

As far as the brakes go, a standard setup in optimum condition should be fine for normal road conditions. Key things to do are make sure all your brake hoses are in good condition (fit braided if you're changing them) and change the fluid (which should be done every two years). Obviously decent pads and discs and check the condition of the rear brakes, especially the wheel cylinders which often leak when old. You can lock the wheels with a properly working standard setup (although you obviously should aim not to!).

If you want an easy upgrade for the front discs, you can fit 256mm caliper carriers/calipers from mk2 Golf GTis - they were also fitted standard to 16v Sciroccos. Rear discs are largely unnecessary, except for the look.

Thanks for that.

Your first comment is reassuring. Any thoughts on a good disc/pad setup?

Depends how hard you're driving. For normal use I've found the best quality ones from GSF are fine.

Brake response is poor due to lengthened linkages to accomodate right hand drive conversion on this originally left hand drive design. To improve response, you can fit a bigger servo. This will shorten the pedal throw and give quicker, harder braking under similar pressure. I'm about to do it on mine having experienced someone else's. I upgraded the discs and hoses a while back. This improved the actual braking power itself but not the response time or pedal throw.
