what next?

Earlier today i took out the fuel sender unit from the tank to have a good look around for bits of rust like a few people on here reccomended. Well the inside of the tank looks fine no rust or anything. So where do i look next? The car is tempramental when idling. Sometimes its fine but other times i have to press the accelarator lightly when idling so it does not cut out. Any ideas? The car is a 89 scala 1.8i. Thanks
