A Rebellious Pierburg

Hi Guys,
I'm having some trouble with the Pierburg carb on my 1.8EX. Now, before you all start telling me to rip it out and throw it in the nearest skip, It's on my to-do list as soon as I can afford a Webber. How I long for that day...
However, I have some intermittent troubles just now with the cold-start. Every few days the car will start fine as normal but the car revs will climb to around 3500 revs. I can drive around but the revs will not go below 3500. It's more annoying than anything else, and makes me look like a muppet when I turn up at the lights. After the car has sufficiently warmed up the revs will just drop instantly to about 850. Its like the choke is stuck on then shuts off.
I have the old Haynes manual for Pierburg and Solex carbs but there seems to be so many different parts of the carb that could be faulty I thought I would check to see if anyone else had suffered from something similar.
I don't want to start spending megabucks for something I know I am going to be replacing shortly(ish) but its starting to annoy me. Alternatively does anyone know where I can get a (very) cheap Webber?
James
