1988 Helios Blue GTX

Post by D-reame »

Well here she is. Having safely driven it 200 miles home I have now had chance to give it a good going over.

The list of work to be done is as follows:

It had a cold starting problem. This has now been fixed with a new fuel pump relay as the old one did not prime. Also No.1 injector had a loose union connection resulting in a loss of fuel pressure and lumpy running.

I have also due to age 22 years and miles 61k replaced all four injectors with new units. The result has transformed the way it starts, drives and idles. It now fires instantly.

A full service with all filters replaced.

Next, the b-pillar vinyl. The driver’s side had cracked so I bought new and have replaced the drivers side but I am waiting to do the passenger side until I have had the passenger door replaced and painted. It is going back due to the first paint being a shade out. The original paint is now obsolete.

I have now refurbished the GTX Badges.

I have replaced the electric window switches which were not standard. They were in the centre console near the gear lever. They are now in the doors with the correct wiring loom complete with automatic fuse and relay.

Image

I had the windscreen replaced through my insurance due to a water leak. I had all the interior out. Replaced the seals on the rear boot lock and blower fan in the scuttle tray. Also replaced the door weather shields inside behind the door cards.

Still to do:

New rear wheel bearings.

All four shocks with original bilstein and new strut top mounts. They are here, just waiting to be installed.

While I have the shocks off I plan to remove the wheels arch liners. Scrub the arches before applying black waxoil to them and the under side of the floor plan. I will be dropping the rear arm off to paint the fuel tank. I can then waxoil the floor pan between the tank before refitting it. This is for piece of mind.

While the rear arm is off, this will be bead blasted and powder coated along with the anti-roll bar. New bushes all round.

G60 brake conversion with Servo and Master cylinder. Rears will be standard but stripped painted and rebuilt.

Then the pretty bits

BBS RA 15” or Ronal LS not sure :dunno:

Clear front Indies. (if I can find any without buying new at £120 a pair)

Thinking about losing the front fogs They are in perfect condition with no rust or cracks should any one want them if I do.

More to follow…..Looking forward to summer :chill:

All in all that looks to be a very tidy looking motor mate

Look forward to see what else you do to it, but I'm sure it'll be cracking!!

You will have to pop over for a coffee mate. I am concentrating on the mechanics before the pretty stuff.

Taking my time and getting there slowly. It is a good car just needs some TLC. Really glad I bought this one even though it cost me a small fortune. I will be coming to the meetings in the summer so really looking forward to putting faces to names over a few beers (or two). :beers:

Cheers GTXTRA. Once I get it all fettled I can give it a good going over cosmetically. Just need to get the basics done first.

I will be around this summer. I missed the whole scene the last time I was here with my old GTII (I miss that car  ).

Not going to miss it again.

If you dont mind me asking. What wheels are on your car in your signature image?

they're either a MIM or an EXIP 7 X 15 ET 25 early 90's design.

theres a similar set in for sale section i linked to earlier this week and also another set on ebay - see my a16 gtx project thread for more pics incl the awful polished rim look i bought them with a year ago.

I ve had a really busy couple of days.

Got the door replaced fitted and painted. very happy with the result as there was no need to blend the paint as it was a perfect match in colour texture and grain. Thanks to Storey Refinishing in Redcar.

Jobs to be done were:
Replace Shocks front and rear also with new strut mounts. Original genuine parts used. I got a good deal on the fronts as they were a complete leg at £60 each. Big thanks to Lookers VW in Middlesbrough.
Replace the Alternator with a 60 Amp.
Replace the Battery with a Bosch silver top 55Ah
Replace the Cam-belt and new tensioner
Replace the Water pump
Replace theThermostat
New long life coolant after a thorough flush through.
Badges and vinyl on. Just have the other side to do now. Not looking forward to that!
Free off the dissy ready for set up on Monday. Its booked into AutoMark in Stokesley for a full setup. Its running good but he works wonders with these cars. They always come back like a different car for the better.

Just looking forward to being able to give it a good wash and polish (it needs it).

Just a point of clarification.

I phoned lookers after I could not get a full leg anywhere else. I did not want to go down the lowering sports kit route.

The guy said there were 12 at the factory. I was just about to pay for two at £92+VAT when the chap said wait because his system was showing two in stock. He then informed me they were old stock as some had ordered them about a year ago and never collected.

As such he was able to do me a good deal.

Sorry to shatter the excitement guys.

Cheers mate! How about giving them a call and saying that if we ordered 2 sets between us what sort of discount would we get. I am currently in the south and my local dealer isn't really into a bit of banter that may lead to a bargain!
