Can someone explain tyre sizes to me?

I'll be looking for some new tyres once I've painted my newly aquired rims, but I have no idea what the sizes mean or what is a standard size.
175/70 R14 H (84). So what would this mean? I assume 14 is the size of the wheel it's going on.
Also, what's a standardish size for a standard 14 inch steel Scirocco wheel?

175/70 R14 H (84
175 tyre width in mm
70 - tyre sidewall profile – sidewall height expressed as a percentage of its width
r radial
h speed rating i think up to 130 mph

Im not an expert but I believe that the sizes mean, 175 is the measurement across the tyre width in mm, 70 is the size in mm from the rim to the tyre tread R14 is the size of the wheel rim in inches, H is the speed rating , (84) No idea!!
My tyres on the standard Scirocco 14 inch wheels are 185/60/14 ( H)
I think there is a link on the opening page on the scirocco register that tell you all and more that you ever wanted to know about tyre sizes and wheels.

84 will be the load rating I believe.
Edit - heavier the car = higher load rating
