Smearing Window Rubbers
Now, I'm guessing hte answer is all down to the rubbers being old and slowly deconstructing themselves back to their former carbon components... however....
ever since I've had the car, the window rubbers "leak" black crud... leaving nice smearing down my white (due to be cream) paintwork. Any cure? Or is all lost with these current rubbers and new ones required.
Cheers!
Rich

Cheers for the move... realised after I'd posted it that it was in the wrong topic
Re: Smearing Window Rubbers
pictures?
if its the rear side windows they are relatively easy to remove and fit new seals to - if you can track down some decent new ones.

Yup, rear quarters.
I priced up the new option today... £97 for both plus VAT, hence why posting on here for a possible solution :D

Re: Smearing Window Rubbers
If the rear quarters have never been taken out it might just be the sealant breaking down, you might not need to replace the actual seals.
The windows come out quite easily, no need to cut the seals off, unlike the front or rears were there is a chance of cracking the glass because of the pressure.
I had some paintwork that required the rear quarters to come out twice (once to remove the black vinyl on the pillar and again for a spot of rust at the rear corner of the window) and I asked about the seals and the guy said that they were fine so he just cleaned them out, got rid of all the old sealant and put them back in with new stuff.
I have a white '89 Scala so I can understand your frustration with the black smears.

Re: Smearing Window Rubbers
aaaah, sweet :)
The windows will be coming out when it gets it's overhaul, so all's good :)
That'll also answer why it streaked and smeared more after a good scrub up. There was me thinking she didn't like to be clean. Dirty girl! lol

Re: Smearing Window Rubbers
Could it be residue created by previous 'back to black' type products washing off?

Re: Smearing Window Rubbers
That was what I originally thought... BUT... I've scrubbed them til I was tired (which wasn't too long) and the car gets regularly cleaned, I'd have thought they'd have stopped doing it by now if it was. I think it may well be hte sealant degrading in fairness. Litterally drips down the side after a pressure wash, so the force of the jet is obviously aggravating the situation.
I'm in turmoil at the mo' whether to fork out for new seals once it gets it's respray

Re: Smearing Window Rubbers
Why don't you pop them before the respray and see if new sealant sorts the problem? Doesn't take long and you'll have a better idea of the condition of the seals.
