Hi all..

Fogs question. My 1984 Storm has front foglights mounted in the traditional manner under the front bumper. They don't work though. The fuse/relay box has a relay No 15 in position 7. Thus far Mr Google implies that this relay is related to the front fogs. The foglight switch on the RH of the instrument cluster feels like it has two positions. It works OK for the rear foglight at both settings.

So.. are fogs of this sort part of the 'standard' equipment for the MK2 Storm trim level ? If no, I might just remove 'em. If yes, any info you can flow me on the relevance of Relay 15 and it's fusebox position and the way the front fogs should be switching etc.. would be much appreciated ! Don't have an owners handbook (yet) and Mssrs Haynes and Bentley are hiding the information very succesfully from me if it is in there.

Nope, Mk2 Storm did not have front fogs, see the relevant page from the sales brochure showing the front of the car:

I would imagine VW used a standard switch regardless of what was fitted in terms of lights. You'll probably find the loom contains the necessary wiring for fogs even if they weren't originally fitted - it's cheaper that way if you're mass-producing.

No lights (as standard) on a Storm.
My fog light switch has 2 clicks, as Ed says a generic switch.

As stated, no front fogs as standard. But there is a spare plug hidden under the expansion bottle that provides power to them if needed. And yes it does work through the two position switch on the dash without any mods. All thats needed is to extend the wiring from the spare plug down to the fog lights.

have you checked the bulbs aren't blown?

Nate.. err, yes a little continuity check is in order. Previous (mechanically adept) keeper said 'I never got them to work' but you should never assume anything eh..

If it's nothing obvious, then they are a' comin off !

have you also checked the fuse, acording to haynes wiring diagram the relay just alows you to turn fogs on when the lights are on. its the switch that does the busines of switching them on. hence why they melt wen they get a bit old running such high current through a switch.

w've had 4 this week. customer is convinced his/her car has some horrifically expensive wiring problem, but actually just has 2 blown headlight bulbs.

speaking of which, i got told this story by an aa patrol.

a woman drove into a garage just as they were shutting up for the night desperate for a headlight fixing. the owner fitted a new bulb for her for a tenner and she drove away happy.

a few days later she came back in and asked to see the manager as she had a serious complaint. "ever since you changed my headlight bulb the brakes have been making a funny noise."

the garage owner was already having a bad day, so he just pulled the new bulb out, gave her the tenner back and told her that her brakes should be fine now, as he'd put it back to how it was before he touched it.
