GEAR LINKAGE - HELP

I've just changed all the gear linkage bushes and the 2 selector rods on the Gl, they were totally worn out, but i seem to have altered it and now cant select all the gears.
When i'd finished changing them i could only get 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse (3rd was were 1st was supposed to be!)
I undone the clamp on the shift rod and altered it slightly and then ended up with reverse were 1st should be (ie. it will go straight into reverse without pushing the gearstick down)
I've tried a number of times but keep ending up with one of the above.

Can anyone help?

cheers
Tony

Those dont work for the mk1 golf mk1-2 rocco. I brought one on the off chance to try.
Sitting in my tool box now rusting..

Tony, make sure that the rod's you've replaced are the correct one's and are fitted the correct way round. The one that runs from the gear selector rod to the arm on the gear box is correctly fitted right way round.
If they are correct have you tried turning the rod the other way, ie to make the gear stick sit closer to the passenger side.

That would be great, never seen one of them before! Would the one on ebay work for a mk2 Scirocco?

I re-set mine by having someone hold the gearstick right over by 5th in the car (not in 'gear' tho) and then with the gearbox in neutral re-attach the spline under the steering rack

Worked a treat for me :good:

What age is the car?

I had a similar problem in my '89 Rocco after fitting a quickshift linkage. I took the bolt off the end of the shift rod, and the metal plate off the bottom of the gear lever (under the car). I followed the Haynes instructions to adjust the lever till it was in the middle of its travel, and reconnected. I think it took a couple of attempts to get it right, but it sorted it.

You need to try and get the shift rod to halfway between these two points.

If you take the bottom of the rubber boot off underneath the gear lever, the finger that stops the gear lever going over for reverse, should be 15mm away from the gear lever cage and with the gearbox in neutral, it should be central.
I think Haynes has a picture.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
Managed to get it sorted today, undid the shiftrod clamp then got my mate to push the gear lever towards reverse while i jammed a socket with a 14mm outside diameter in between the shift finger and the gear lever cage, then just tightened up the clamp. Hey presto, now got a five speed scirocco again :groove:

The gear selector rod actually came out of the clamp on mine last week when I was changing gear!

Luckily I was in 4th so I drove home and fixed it but it meant that I had to slip the clutch a lot. Doing a standing start in 4th gear at road junctions is not fun.

gald to hear its sorted.

Can you do mine for me !? Still no joy.

Mine selector rod popped out on way to Cosford last year when pulling of motorway - Luckily help was at hand and Sean sorted it out for us.

What do you mean by selector rod! if its the one with the bolted clamp on the end then you need to take the cap off the bottom of rubber enclosure underneath the car below the gearstick and centralise the shift finger with the casing. If you've got a haynes manual it explains it a lot better in there (with pictures). And its a lot easier with someone else to help, thats where i was going wrong, trying to adjust it by myself.

Whereabouts are you in London?

cheers
Tony

Last time I did it, I had *cough*help.

Neither my wife OR my mother understood the "hold that still whilst I connect it up please" It's still a bit jerky into first and second... but getting a new gearstick of Rocco-Yoda shortly and may well make an MDF hold-it-still attachment to do it on my own.
