Won't start :(

Ok.. so have been driving my mini for a few days, just dropped it off home and now back onto the rocco as a daily. Got in, all going well, engine starts, albeit very splutteringly, and then procedded to die repeatedly. In a kind of slow painful way. Within about 5 seconds of starting, and as soon as you let off the acceleration.
Its an 88 Scala, 1.8 Carbed. (pierburg) Bear in mind im a very impoverished student, and cannot afford the time or money to fit a weber. Any ideas of what it could be? I've got a new set of spark plugs i'll be fitting soon.

Fuels literally a couple of weeks old. Was running perfectly before then for at least 2 months, so cant see it being a problem. Timings a possiblity, its not something i've yet had the chance to check in relation to er.. another problem i've been having.

Its has been rather damp here so it could be condensation in the dissy cap, HT leads? try spraying a bit of WD40 in there.

Could be an air lock. take off your petrol fillercap.

How old are your HT leads?
Might be worth asking Santa for a new set!

If you are replacing the plugs..

i'd agree with the likely fault, but not the remedy! spraying everything in wd40 causes more problems than it cures. it breaks down the insulation on your plug leads and makes dirt stick to everything.
pop the dizzy cap off, clean the contacts and dry it with a bit of bogroll. do the same for the rotor arm
