Ive been driving the scala for a few weeks now with no probs, i love this car but it has started to play up again.

i have put a new fuel filler pipe on ,drained and flushed the tank left a magnet in there a new fuel pump and new coil . it has run without missing a beat but last night i drove about 6 miles got home as i went to park and the temp light started to flash and it just cut out, everytime i started it it would run untill i put it in reverse and the would lose all power and stall. can anyone tell me what this might be please. it do seem to smell hot sometimes but the temp gauge always stays just over half way when its running. jen

HI Jen,
the temp light is the low coolant indicator.
There is no reason for it to cut out when reverse is selected - is you car a manual or automatic? Does it reverse at all? If there is a problem in the gearbox it could be fine going forwards but something jamming when in reverse. If it is, it'll feel like the handbrake suddenly jamming on.

have just found this in the cars paper work it was taken in to peter cooper for loss of power in april they found preheat valve not working replaced valve new plugs fuel filter also cleaned carb and replaced the thermostat also before that it went in for loss of power again they found coolant level low and suspect choke was re activated due to low coolant.jen

Hard to diagnose without seeing the car, maybe there is someone on here that lives near you and can help?

Not sure if it is worth checking the earth lead from the coil to the engine, just to check if it is attached or broken.

Ahhh..I see it now!
The problem is quite clear, plain and simple! You've got an Auto!
Have you checked all associated relays and fuses? A friend of mines landrover used to suffer intimitent problems running and start, then would be fine for a few days..Turned out to be a looe fuse.

One of my mates used to have a similar problem with his polo and it turned out to be the gasket between the manifold and the carb. Every so often it would suck air through, leading to weak fuel mixture and stalling. He used to 'control' it with the manual choke until he found out the cause.

I have looked at the fuses and relays today , all seems well there. i will look at that gasket this prob has to be something so stupid as the car runs so well ,but when it does go its just like you have turned the ignition off. jen
