Just got a set of vented disks with associated pads.

My question is, do they really make much difference over standard disks? I've had vented and grooved disks before and thought they made a little difference, or is it just in my head?

I suspect that unless you're doing lots of heavy breaking over a long period of time (i.e. on a track) they will do very little different. Mostly I'd expect them to have reduced brake fade under those circumstances.

they will reduce brake fade if you have a "spirited" driving style. make sure you go easy on them for the first couple of hundred miles to let them bed in properly, or you risk badly warping the discs (voice of experience!)

as far as i know vented disks were standard on later mkII's so i can't understand why you wouldn't have them?

All injected MK2's had vented brakes on the front standard.

my old GTS also had them

OK, so when I purchased the car it had standard disks on it. Off here got hold of some secondhand vented/grooved discs, they wore out, so found some caddy (same as golf/rocco discs) and put them on as a tempory measure, also 'found' some new pads in the shed (brother has gone to oz for a few years to figure he won't be needing them). The only problem is they screech/squell/whistle when braking lightly much to the displeasure of anyone nearby.

Hence new disks and pads.
