hidden Mk1 install?

Has anyone got any advice for a hidden install in my Mk1? Basically I'm removing the head unit from the dash board (replace with gauges) and want to mount one somewhere else. I am thinking maybe under the dash where it's still reachable e.g. has anyone done anything similar?

Years and years ago i saw a head unit that was mounted in the door pocket. It looked a bit odd but worked.
In theory you could mount it just about anywhere

i saw a beautiful installation a few years ago. basically, the guy had used 2 identical head units. one was mounted in the glovebox out of sight. the other was then butchered so as to provide a "socket" to plug the faceplate into in the driver's sun visor. the 2nd faceplate was used as a "plug" to connect to the unit hidden in the glovebox. the 2 were then joined with some suitable shielded cable. does that make sense?

Not what I had in mind really, I'm thinking more like mounting a normal head unit somewhere, need to find a suitable recepticle for it to be held in by. E.g. hung under the dash or on a parcel shelf, or in the glovebox

Well I took the broken speaker out, it is slightly over 6" outer diameter (around 155-158mm) and fits into the pods which are obviously slightly bigger. Is that a standard size?
They are the coaxial type, with 2 tweeters out infront of the main cone if you catch my drift. I'd just be happy replacing those with the modern equivalent because these old ones were adequate in such a small car.
I'd like to keep them in the old pods for a period look too

6" and 6.5" are both very common sizes, although this is what they are called, it's probably not their exact measurement, so i suspect yours will be one or other of these. take it into hellfrauds and compare it for size verses the ones they have on display, then go to somewhere like caraudiodirect.co.uk and get them cheaperer. also worth noting the difference between the on the shelf price and the internet price will hellfords - if you reserve online you get them cheaper

Don't ever buy anything from halfords that other places sell too. I have an account with their main supplier at trade price. Plus anything they sell can be found cheaper on ebay or elsewhere online if you can't be bothered buying it through me. Massively overpriced.

halfords are good when it's a sunday and you realise you need stuff urgently. most of their kit is also much cheaper if you reserve it online then collect in store
