The oil cooler doesnt seem to be getting hot on my GTi. The MFA said it was upto 107C at one point. I thought it was a constantly open system or am i wrong?

If its a water/oil heat exchanger it should be constantly open, if you have an air/oil cooler its possible that someone has been fiddling. But I don't think VW fitted thermostatic controllers to them either back in the day.

took a look at it today and turns out they do come with a thermostatic valve as standard it was in the Haynes book, but its not set to open till 110C. I thought that was rather high, anybody know if thats the right temp???

My suggestion is to take the whole lot out and replace it with a mocal oil cooler kit or go with the water one what is fitted on the later injection cars. They always have problems with the thermostatic valve on them, on my GTi it does not even open at all lol lol lol.
If I had the money I would buy the mocal one but they are not cheap, so I might fit the water cooled one as I have a DX engine sat in the drive way lol. It should do the same job as the air cooled one, but if you were using it on the track then I might say use the air cooled one.
The other thing is to do it take it off and give it a very good clean inside becuase it might be blocked up abit.
