Scirocco Register

Hi all!

I'm giving my 89 Scala some much needed attention at the moment and one of the first jobs was to replace the rear shoes and cylinders, but I've come up against a small problem.

I have the same type of shoes that came off, everything is adjusted back off, I've lined the shoes up best I can but still can't get the drum on, I'm pretty baffled as I can close the cylinder pistons in a bit more but the shoes will not go in any further. The Handbrake is fully off, I checked twice incase I was going mad.

I'd appreciate any advice or knowledge of a common problem anyone could give.

I had this problem when I redid my rear brakes a while ago. If I remember correctly, the problem is the wedge shaped thing, which needs to be adjusted so that the brake shoes sit a bit closer together. Hard to describe well without a picture:



It's the bit connected to the top of the vertical spring on the left in this picture.

this is the think. push the wedge up so you can close the shoes in a bit. once you've got the drum on, spin it round so you can see the hole in the bottom of the wedge thru the wheel bolt hole. get someone to stand on the brakes nice and hard then pull the wedge down again.

I had the same problem the other day aswell, had to consult the wonderful book of Haynes, just push the bottom of the wedge up with a scewdriver and the drums will come in)
also make sure the bump at on the wedge is facing towards the backplace before you put it back together, mine was on the wrong way round when i took it apart, nearly didnt notice.

I had pulled the wedge up as far as it would go, although I'll see if i can get it to go any further the spring that pulls it down was hitting the shoe which stopped it going up much higher....
