Whiney Steering

I've had 2 Sciroccos now and both have/had a bit of a whine to the steering. It was mainly in the winter when it was cold. Only seemed to happen at slower speeds too. Sounded like it was coming from near the steering wheel rather than further down the line. What's it all about? Is it an easy fix?

Normally that would be the case, but the speaker in the drivers door rattles! Ah to own a Scirocco!

i know it's hard to describe a noise, but what kind of noise is it?

likely culprits are:

tyre squeal
bearings in top mounts
rack in need of grease
lower ball joints wearing / in need of grease
column bearings in need of grease
moose stuck in engine bay

It's a sort of hard to explain. It's not a squeak, it's a sort of lower pitched whine. I'm fairly certain it's coming from between the dash and the steering wheel rather than lower down in the steering mechanism. Can't really hear it from anywhere but inside the car.

It just seems strange that both Sciroccos I've owned have had the same noise. Anyone else get it? It only seems to make the noise when the steering wheel goes over the "right way up/12 o clock" position.

could be the contacts on the back of the wheel for the horn push? they'll be more worn by there than anywhere else. without hearing it, it's kinda hard to be any mor helpful
