Looks like an add on. Follow the wires from it to see where they lead.

I think i've seen one on a rocco in my local scrapyard years ago, no idea what it did then either. Also it all looks a bit too neat for aftermarket and the switch looks like a VAG one.

As above though, check the wiring and see where it goes or what the colours are.

Couldn't be anything to do with immobilising the car could it?

like a sneaky cut off switch to baffle a TWOC'er?

Just a thought

Ye its too neat to be aftermarket and it is the same switch as used on the lights, all i know is that the car was bought with a few optional extras like upgraded speakers so it could be for something like that. Will have to have a proper look when i get chance and i'll let you know.

Had a little look at the switch earlier and it doesn't have any wires connected to it. The switch itself is a rear window heater switch with black tape over the symbol but the housing looks originally fitted, so maybe the switch was just replaced with the nearest thing they could find for some reason.

Would really like to know what it was originally for if anyone can help (I'm looking at you Dr Dub as you seem to be the oracle of all things original)

The car is an 83 GTi btw.

could of been a balance switch for the speakers.
But usally the said switch is found near the gear stick.

was probably used to turn to fog/driving lights on so you didn't need to turn on the headlights!
