1.6 Downpipe

Right, on my way to work this morning the downpipe has fractured at the joint to the centre section on my GT :dash: . Phoned GSF and they don't have any, and none of their suppliers seem to either. What are my options? I can probably bodge it back together to get me through to the weekend :beg: . I also suspect that the back box isn't going to be long before it also needs replacing. Finances are pretty tight at the mo too, so any ingenious ideas are welcome, but I suspect I'm going to have to bite the bullet a bit.

I'm about to pick up a 1.8 exhaust and downpipe for my 1.6GT, meaning my 1.6 stuff will be available very soon - probably next week if you can hang on til then? All in good condition. I'm in Leamington Spa Warwickshire for pickup, otherwise could sort out courier? PM me if interested.

a good temporary fix would be exhaust bandadge and lots of putty with an exhaust clamp or two over it. Use the Holts Gum Gum (sticks like shit to a blanket as my dad says :hehe: ). Did it on our 106 about 2 and a half years ago and its still going strong. All depends on how big the crack is and where it is obviously.

GSF seem to be pulling your plonk. I bought two off them only a few months ago. Try asking for the 1.8 downpipe, its exactly the same.

Well having been under the car, I can confirm that the downpipe is gone and my suspicions about the back box have been confirmed as it has a pinhole below the exit pipe and several pinholes in the bottom of the box. There also is a slight blow from the junction between the centre section and back section. I think as funds are tighter than tight at the mo, I am going to take Ben up on his offer. That should get me through for a while.

I thought that the 1.8 downpipe was a different Diameter and was a different length?

1.6 and 1.8 are definitely different - the one GSF sells has a kink in it to clear an ARB which the 1.6GTs don't have. This means the centre section and backbox aren't compatible with it.

Why would a kink in the downpipe to clear the arb mean that the centre section and back box are not compatible?

I'm pretty sure that the 1.6 and 1.8 exhausts are the same diameter and length, ensuring ease of fitment. The size of centre section silencers may be a slightly different size thats all.

Andy -Sounds like the whole system is gone, shop around, there are some good systems out there.

1.6 exhaust system http://www.catalogue.bosal.com/pages/ex ... &year=1988

1.8 exhaust system http://www.catalogue.bosal.com/pages/ex ... &year=1988

If you compare these two pages you can see that the downpipe on the 1.6 is also shorter, with a longer centre section, and also the centre pipes are a different diameter (different part numbers on the exhaust clamps).

I know it's weird - makes no sense why they should be different, but different they are. :dunno: Especially frustrating if you have a 1.6GT, cos all the bits are different!

well i'll be a monkeys whatsit, see what you mean. :hi:

the centre pipe though, a shorter box on the 1.6 as opposed to a shorter downpipe? Sure i have one in the spares stash, i'll compare it to the centre box on her indoors' 1.8, intrigued now...

All sorted now thanks to Ben upgrading his exhaust. After some jiggery pokery and partial dropping of the rear beam, the exhaust has been replaced. The exhaust from Ben fitted like a glove, now I don't have to worry about bits falling off if I go over a bump!!!
