this oil is way to thin. The best for EW or EX or DX engines (generally the vw 80's 1.6 or 1.8) is 15W/50.

I've recently been trying some 20/50 in my 1.6. Have to say it's been pretty sucessful so far. I thought it may be a tad thick and the tappets not like it too much, but they've been very quiet so far. Oil pressure is up and on a whole the engine seems much quieter. I mainly do long journeys so most of the running is done at full temp.

Looked in the handbook first and it's on the recommended list as long as you don't go below -10 and it's pretty rare we get that low in this country!

If the engine is healthy than a 10w40 or a 15w40 would be fine, if you're blowing plumes of grey smoke when you floor it, or the buzzer of death comes on when the donk is warmed up then maybe consider going with a 50weight, but at that point I'd also think about swapping the engine - it's not like you're short of younger, powerful replacements these days..
