Longtermwise im thinking of rebuilding an engine for my GTi and was just wondering if anyone knows what the max power you could get out of the DX engine and how you would go about doing it.
So far i was thinking: boring out to 2L and uprated cams.

if you want to stick with your own engine a dx can be bored out to 2.0 litre (or even 2.1 at a squeeze, ask The Autoad) and with cam/tuning get you up to 150 bhp or so.

Instead of boring it out, why dont you just get a 2ltr bottom end?

2.0l bottom end has complications - they're generally taller, which may mean clearance issues if you've got a strut-brace, and you'll need a longer cam-belt, and maybe a different exhaust manfiold -YMMV. The shorter bottom ends came from a fairly small run of audis and passats, and are pretty hard to find, especially in good nick.

Turbo it :)

Find a 2ltr passat.
2E engine code will fit in fine, all you need to do is remove the gear, box clutch, pas set up,head. So the end result is the same as your 1.8.
Drop your 1.8 head on dx runs well on the 2e block.
Use the 2ltr head gasket and cam belt, head bolts theres about 2 pound price difference in the parts compared to the 1.8.

After bolting your DX head on, add the cam belt side engine mount, (holes allready there) then add cambelt, use your clutch set up or new one 210mm.
For the dizzy you can either run the 2ltr one without a vacume, (the 2ltrs dont use a vacume anyway) or you can use your DX one but this is a bit more involved
You got to change the cog on the end, hammer and punch involved, also some ive heard that some people need a "ring" to sit in the dizzy hole on the block, as the dx dizzy is meant to be slimmer than the E2, never had a problem myself.
Bolt on your dx gearbox and your ready to fit back in.
Now there will be the argument, and the "hmm" the 2e block wont fit as it's taller, well im totally against all that, i had one fitted for 2 -3 years and never
had a problem, on exhaust clearance, strut brace clearance, or even bonnet clearance. So its up to you on the advise you want to follow, personly id do it
as it's very simple.
