Possible Ignition switch problem - Help please.

Post by Redrum »

Hi all, we have a new chap on the site who has just picked up a GT2 from Ebay. It runs well but broke down a short distance from his house on returning from picking it up. I have taken this from his 'new here' thread on the gen discussion.

Its worth noting that the ignition barrel and key seems to have been supplemented by a starter button at some point.

Can anyone help ?

Redrum i am suspecting you are so right! its a starter button or ignition problem. you have to turn the ignition on until the lights on the dash come on and then press the starter button to fire up the engine. only now the lights wont come on unless you turn the ignition key as far as it will go to beyond the on possition and then hold the key in that possition. as soon as u let go of the key and it springs bac to the on possition the lights go out. the car starts fine and runs fine when u hold the ignition key right round. also the headlights stopped working when this prob happened and wont work at all now. what do u recon?

My opinion is that its an ignition switch problem of some sort. Obviously the wiring has been fettled with to fit the button and this may have loosened some wires on the switch? It would explain the lights as they are connected to the ignition switch so you cant have the main lights on when the ignition is off. If the wiring looks fine then perhaps the switch is FUBAR.

My 2p, but Im no mechanic.

either the switch or the ign barrel is worn. this will be the reason for the starter switch being added in the first place - the key wouldn't turn far enough to switch it. my scala di it an the passat i've got now is like it
