The Silver Scala

June 05- 57k 1 little old lady owner Scala - Bought as a potential donor shell for the then wrecked BRM car but on reflection too nice to mess with that much.
Early shot by which time I had already sorted the scabby Avus rims, a Weitec GT kit, Jetex exhaust, shortshift, c and r lower brace/neuspeed top brace, clear indies and NOS gtx rear lights. Removed a tow bar (owner had a dinghy) and swapped the always tacky Scala B pillar badges for Storm style Karmann ones that had survived from the wreck.

What you cant see in this crappy shot is the badly scraped bumpers/bodykit and matt finish near side panels/door courtesy of the previous owners parking (it would appear) by touch habits.

Because this is the nearest thing to a daily I have hadn't really imagined further major changes and the Valver and the BRM car needed attention too......then in March 07 a set of D90'd came up with adaptors and tyres at a good price with instalments! (cheers Mr Brown)

but ever since the d90s' went on I have never really been happy with the look, front end in particular, and the width of the rear springs meant i had to fit an extra 2mm shim spacer on the rear, a little bit too much carlos fandango for my personal tastes.

so got Paul at the Phirm to do his stance magic with a set of fully adjustable Weitec coilovers recently acquired via the Adam G/Mr Brown Rocco parts mafia......

Much happier and a big improvement on the road and, pleasantly surprised, a more progressive/comfortable ride. A coil over convert after all these years..........might get round to air by about 2020 at this rate.......... ^_^

To come?
Paint - Bonnet respray inside/out, below waistline chips/scuff on doors and bottom of bodykit, B Pillars, Mirrors. A new front bumper at some stage too, current one still showing the effects of the first owner.
Interior - Having seen a variety of superb silver cars at the shows this year I am tempted by a leather interior in some sort of tasteful shade of red- but thats the colour I am also favouring for the helios car eventually ............
Bay- ongoing cleaning/tidying retaining factory look - this is a 2007 shot, been busy with the wirebrushes/paint brushes since then.

summer 2009

with bits to do on the 16v and the GTL this one has stalled a bit recently.

tidied up the front end a bit but the paint work will have to wait -

Allways a pleasure to this this one one..Just like the BRM car.
Not keen on your idea of the red leather infills. My own taste as the car is pretty much stock at first look / unknowing eye would be black leather finished off with a couple of alloy bits..Maybe door pull pins and mirror adjusting knobs...My own thoughts tho dude...

has come through winter ok - as per rest of fleet flew through MOT a while back.
They all get very regular clean ups in arch/chassis/sill/axle mounts areas.

Changed oil/filter yesterday (NOT as easy as in the pre-coilover era.......) and took for a tracking check and a nail in rear tyre repair at local tyre shop.

One small issue spotted recently, some feral has at some stage stolen a relay (at a show presumably) from the lighting loom so that the spot lights dont work. :mafia:

Very nice i do like looks very good with ie grill, wheels, clear indercaters , being lowered, looks a very good car like your other 16 v i seen at nec brigham classic car show last year

rocker cover, coolant flange, brake fluid and general tune up down the Phirm last week - new rear tyres on order. Decent ones to replace the cheap and nasty Federals the D90's came with that have basically deformed............

seat change possible once i see what a set of late corrado seats i have secured suit the best be it mk1, brm or this. never cared much for the late tartan pattern despite it being the best one for wear and tear.

lovin' the corrado seats in this.

need to fit a new radiator this week - don't bother with GSF for the 525mm rad for DX cars, it's cheap for all the wrong reasons and doesn't fit properly, got trade discount at local dealer for a factory one.

Am I reading this right, Sean? you've owned this car for several years, and there's only been two sets of wheels on it (in the pictures anyway).

How do you get on with the Rado seats? I find them a bit too low at the front.

:hugegrin: :nerner: YEP. Just never found another look that I like more on this one - G60 steels maybe oneday but for now this one is sorted.

rado seats - yes a fair bit lower, had this set on the BRM since 2006 and have another different pattern set sitting in Notts to put in that car too.

Flew through MOT, been doing a big spring clean on the underside/arches/engine bay after fitting the new rad this week too.

Cambelt/tensioner and alternator belt replaced, new distributor cap/rotor arm needed plus new pads to come too.

Cambelt/tensioner changed, dizzy cap and rotor arm way past sell by date and replaced - let Tim at the Phirm do his old school DX tune up and with some fresh brake brembo discs and ferodo ds pads the scala now fully on song. Really on song.

hadn't much touched this since Inters, lovely new.................water pump today after what looks like the original started leaking just after a coolant and thermostat change.

needs a new AAV. and a wash.

post mot tlc today down at the phirm - isv had packed up last year so now with one that works nicely set up again by Dr Tim Saunders.

Had feared a gearbox oil leak but thankfully just a sump gasket - still had the original one on, not bad for a car built in June '90.

In the continuing absence of the 16v I took the Scala to both Bromley and Inters - SO EASY to keep clean for the shows compared to the black car......

Perfect run up to Bruntingthorpe and back this past weekend - just need to sort some loose ICE wiring but this, especially with the fully adjustable Weitecs, is a really nice long trip motor.
