Scirocco Register

Hey guys,

Need a bit of advice, looking for my first scirocco at the moment.

Going to look at a 1.6 GT this weekend hopefully, how does the 1.6 compare to the 1.8 ? Is there a massively big difference in performance ?

well unless its a mk1 the 1.6 will have a pierburg carb on it, unless its had an upgrade to the webber carb

the 1.8 engine came as either carb or injection (on the gtx, gti and later scala's i think)

i got a late (1991) scala with the injection engine and i love it

1.6 i believe (although havent owned one) isn't slow but not as good as the 1.8

i'd go for 1.8 everytime, but you also gotta consider insurance. how old are you? im 27 with a clean license (somehow!) and 6 years no claims and my insurance is £200 fully comp

in comparison jorj on here is selling her 1.8 carburettor scala cos the insurance is £110 per month! She's 23 (i think!) and been driving 2/3 years

ok I dont know too much about the mk1 engines but lets say were talking about mk2's:

There were 4 later cars that came with carb'd engines (presume you're looking at a carb for lower insurance purposes)

GT 1.6
GT 1.8
Scala (Carb) 1.8
GT2 1.8

Be careful as Will mentioned the later scala's 89+ came as injection while 87/88 could be either.

all 4 of the above are 8v engines and come with either of these two engines:

EW – 1.6l 8v carb approx 75BHp

EX – 1.8l 8v carb approx 90BHp

To upgrade to an injection would be the following standard engine:

DX – 1.8l 8v K-jet injection approx 110BHp

I've never actually driven a 1.6 carb and they are getting rarer to see..

As Will mentioned alot of the carb'd cars may have had their twin autochoke carb's (made by pierberg) changed for manual choke webbers as these are thought to be more reliable. Im sure people can give you their opinions on these on here.

I bought my first scirocco as an injection modified 16v and find a massive difference to the carb 8v I test drove first. However I was 23 when I bought it so the insurance while was still below £1k

I cant comment on performance as ive never driven one.
I scrapped one last year and could not beieve the differences, not always obvious and stated. No anti roll bars is something very significant different, Also the discs are not ventilated. This is not a problem as ventilated discs are a sraight swop
Personaly Unless your after something rare and different go for a 1.8

I have had several Scirocco's over the years both MK1's and 2's.
On a MK2 the 1.6 powered a GL and GT both with carbs, and a 1.6 injection powered the early GTI.
The 1.8 carb was fitted to a GTL, a GTS and early Scala's.
I am a big fan of the DX engine which was fitted to later GTI's, Storms, GTX's and later Scala's.

The 1.8l injection engine models are both quicker by about 7 mph and more economical than either the 1.6 or 1.8 carb'd models.
This engine is a legend IMHO.

Obviously the quickest Scirocco was the 1.8 16 valve!

I have a 1.6GT, they run 75bhp (when new!) so they arent the quickest of engines. Ive still got a pierburg carb on mine and its done 160k miles, still running sweet as.
I am planning a engine swap, but unless your going to be using her for motorways, the 1.6 isnt a bad engine at all in my book.

1600 mk2 are prety slow, 1800s are better but still prety slow in standard guise. Injected ones are the ticket, quickest and most economical in the range

Thanks loads for all the info, it's been really helpful. I'm swaying towards the 1.8 mostly but having just found a 1.6 GT to view this weekend I really wanted some opinions as only driven the 1.8 so far.

I'm 25 and the insurance quotes I've had so far havn't been so bad at all, compared to a few I've had for MK2 Golf GTi's the Scirocco seems a lot more insurance friendly. Having only recently fallen for the Scirocco over the Golf I'm quickly trying to read up and learn about the car, thanks for the posts guys!

In that case im sure many of us would highly recommend an injection - you may be lucky and get one which needs a little tlc for £600 (I saw thats how much you had to spend in another post) or if you can stretch it a bit more to say £800 - £1000 you will probably find yourself a rather tidy scala (injected) or gtx.

yeah I thought it better to push up my spend by a couple of hundred to try and find a cleaner model. Think I'm being a bit too picky though.

Nothing wrong with the 1.6s, still a good strong lump. Theres plenty of simple things you can do to squeeze a bit more out of them. One good mod is to fit a 1.8i camshaft to a 1.6 carb engine, just ask LEEP on here. Other things include four branch manifolds, a Webber conversion and K&N air filter.
Risocco (Alex) has recently spiced up his 1.6.

my two roccos were absolutely identical save for the fact that one was a 1.6, one was a 1.8 (both carb'd).

The 1.8, when i had got it working properly, was definitely torquier and more revvy, which i wanted. But the 1.6 was a good enough wee engine, still felt faster than its humble power output would suggest. and because it was so under-stressed, it was invincible!

Under-stressed? She was put under alot of stress before she drove into the garage for the last time

Made my decision and picked up a 1.8 in the end, it's an 8v carb'd GTII.

Drove back down from Worcester last night to the south east, she really picks up when you give her some beans! Put a smile on my face
