Hi all,

Some of you may recall that I had a gearbox leak issue with my 'rocco constantly fouling the clutch assembly with oil. It's still an ongoing problem and after speaking in depth with a local gearbox specialist he advised me to find a replacement box as it sounds like it may be caused by a hairline crack in the casing, he wasn't veey inclined to look at it beforehand and I'm getting to a point where I'd rather just swap it out as I use the car daily and I'll need it back on the road fast.

I really want to get this problem sorted once and for all so if anybody has a good gearbox they're willing to offer up then I'd be very interested. I've had the car for 6 years now and it's always been an issue so I'm getting desperate to finally have it sorted for good.

It's a GTS spec, the box is originally a 4+E and I'd really like to keep it original so if anybody can help with providing one then get in touch!

A little more info could help.

Year, Model, Gearbox code ?.

Maybe just get the half of the box that is cracked ?

Hi Blueshark

I completely forgot to add the code, it's a 4T box. The car is a 1985 UK spec GTS, 1.8 8v carb EX engine.

The problem I have is that there are not many local gearbox specialists and those I have asked don't seem interested in working on it. I have found one local shop who I have used for another car years back but I need to remove the gearbox myself and take it there for them to assess and carry out the work and if it's beyond repair then I'll have no gearbox as they won't want to reassemble

as you can imagine all of that is pretty difficult to navigate when the car is a daily driver and the easiest solution I can think of is find another box I can get refurbed and swap them over.

I'm not entirely convinced that the box is cracked like the previous guy I spoke to advised. I personally think it's likely that the push rod or bushing is worn and causing problems with the push rod seal, it doesn't leak an awful amount but enough to coat the friction plate in oil. There are no drips or wetness to the bottom of the bellhousing for example.

Have you also changed the part numbers 2,3 and 4 ?.
Getting a oily clutch is mainly caused by this seal leaking.
If the bronze bush has worn your seal will be leaking again in no time.
