I'm looking for some advice on how to tackle my 1.6 GTi Mk1 that has been in dry storage for about 20 years without being moved or started.
Firstly is it likely that the engine will be seized and need replacing or would it be reasonable money to get it refurbed?
How would I go about assessing if the engine is good/bad/ugly? Are there specialists that could help get a mk1 back on the road?
It was a good runner when it went away, I recall it needed valve stem seals renewed and the fuel pump and control system and injectors were getting a bit long in the tooth. Are all fuel system components still available?

1ST thing you will want to do is take out spark plugs and have a good look in the bores to see state of play rust wise
if it has been dry stored it should be reasonably ok
next before trying to turn the engine over you will need to replace the timing belt or it is very likely the belt will snap and engine damage will occur
put some 50/50 engine oil to diesel mix down the spark plug holes to lubricate the bores and then use a spanner on the crank to turn it over by hand to see if it is seized or not.
if it is seized then its a full strip job and may be easier to source a complete replacement engine but it is worth rebuilding if you can and have the resources
components are still available depending on what you need as most mk1/2 golf stuff will fit fueling wise but maybe costly

Thanks for tips. I've got it home now and it turns over okay. But no power to the fuel pump relay so does not start. Good tip on changing the timing belt. Would you recommend a supplier for that and other stuff I'll probably need like HT leads, fuel lines, rear brake lines, fuel tank, etc?

6 months or so on, after a new rear axle mountings (chassis sections), new fuel tank and pump and lines, new back brakes, the engine is now running fantastically. Turned over fine initially but with no fueling until recently it never started. Kyle Mundy from Skyrocket Automotive came to me and got it started with a bit of a wizard touch. Then I replaced the air filter, oil & filter, timing belt and tuned it up.
Initially with timing at TDC it would not run well at all and not under load past about 3000 rpm. Timing now advanced to about 16 degrees BTDC, mix and idle adjusted iteratively, and it goes like a turbo after about 3500 rpm. Just like it used to.
Now registered as MoT exempt and Taxed for free.
Will it be added to a register somewhere as a road going scirocco; does a scirocco register exist??
