Hi Guys

The boys speedo cable looks like it has given up the ghost.

Any idea which cable is best for an 86 Mk2 Scirocco GTX?

He's had a look on Heritage parts but reckons there are a few on there.

Cheers

Managed to obtain one from VW Classic Parts. Had our local mechanic replace it yesterday along with a coolant flush and change.

Sadly only lasted a day. The speedo stopped working again. It’s had a brand new cable too. The garage are going to look at it again but any ideas in the meantime?

Thanks.

So I spoke to our mechanic who had trouble fitting the cable and he reckons it must be an issue with the gearbox side.

We can get the gearbox refurbished locally for around £260 +VAT excluding parts. Considering it had a slight gearbox leak I think we'll get it booked in.

Never know or heard of a problem with the gearbox speedo drive, usually the problem is the cable has popped off the back of the instrument cluster as it’s held on with a small clip.
Be very careful removing the speedo cable gearbox end as the cog can fall off into the gearbox then it’s a nightmare to get it back out. Just in case it’s the cog lose on cable gearbox end as there’s a small C clip to hold the cog on.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the info.

I've watched the video's on Youtube and I'm going to be very careful if we attempt this. It's not the cluster as the boy disconnected it and drove down the road and the cable wasn't spinning. Hoping it hasn't fallen off on it's own accord.

Will attempt to have a look tonight and get back.

I can’t even get the cable out. It’s in there very tight. I don’t want to pull too hard in case I lose the spline drive on the end of the cable. I think it’s time to let the experts try.

Try to jack up the the front of the car and get someone to turn the wheels around while you pull on the cable, it may help as the cog turns and not jammed in place.

Thanks Mark

Will give that a try! We have a new plastic drive spline and circlip coming this week.

There is 3 different coloured plastic drives for the speedo with different numbers of teeth so hopefully you have the right one…
I guess the one in the car is red?

They do sometimes need a dam good pull to get the cog off the speedo drive as long of the clip hasn’t rusted away.

There is also green and white ones out there..

Let us know how you get on

Hi Mark

The mechanic who replaced the cable told me it was red so I managed to pick up one and a circlip for around £6. The gearbox however is in with the garage having a refurbish as it has a slight gearbox leak anyhow. I will keep you updated on how it goes... I'm hoping the garage can still get parts to refurb the gearbox. We will see.....

So the gearbox/clutch specialist has had a prelim look under the car and it's not too pretty.. The gearbox has 2 leaks which could be bearings and drive transmission seal. He's going to strip down the gearbox and carry out a full refurb and replace the clutch at the same time. It was quite a large leak by the looks of it.

He also spotted the 2 CV joints were split which is an MOT failure, which is due next week.

The other mechanic noticed the fuel leak which I've posted on the Fuel thread.

It's got to be done unfortunately and the boys is paying but it's looking like £1000 work to carry all that out. I'm hoping that is going to be it for a while as we've changed quite a bit already...

Common leaks for the gearbox are the drive shaft flanges, I’ve replaced mine a couple of times, seals and parts are readily available as the 020 gearbox was fitted to loads of VW

Brilliant website with everything you need to work on the 020 gearbox.

Mark you are a massive help to me and the boy. I can't thank you enough for the wealth of information you have passed on.

As for the CV joints they are the outer ones.
