Oil Leak

Hi Guys

So I've cleared up all the issues with the electrical side of the boys Mk2 Scirocco 86 and now it appears we have an oil leak. I noticed quite a bit of oil around the rocker cover but I think there is possibly another leak somewhere else because when I checked the dip stick there was no oil on it whatsoever.

Should I get a low oil warning light come on at some stage? Can someone point me in the right direction to where the sensor is for low oil please? I'm wondering if there is another dodgy connection somewhere.

I've posted a few pics of the engine.

There is no warning light for low oil level, only low or high oil pressure.
High oil pressure is the white one on top of the oil filter and low oil pressure is blue or brown on the side of the head.

Does the oil light come on with the ignition in position 2 and goes out when the engine starts?

It might be worth getting new sensors for both as they are that expensive.

Yes a few oil leaks on the engine, rocker cover gasket is common fault, usually it’s from someone over tightening the nuts as they are only just nipped up as 20Nm.

You can stick with a cork gasket or upgrade to a rubber gasket but you will need to change the studs as the rubber gasket has shoulders built into it and the cork gasket has shoulders on the studs. You only need to use the 8 shorter studs in the rubber kit as the other 4 longer studs are used for a different engine.

You may also have a oil leak near the oil filter type water cooler as it looks wet? Give it a clean up and check as you will need to remove the oil filter, undo the 24mm nut (I think that’s the size?) and you can leave the water pipes attached as there’s just about enough room to lower the oil cooler to fit a new rubber O ring.

Hi again Mark1gls

Thanks for replying. I thought you'd enjoy a mechanical type of problem.

The oil light comes on and goes off as it should do so I'm happy with that!

Mechanical stuff is definitely not my forte and this horrible mucky job I will leave to the boy to get sorted out. He's ordered a rocker gasket I believe but not sure which one until he gets home.

We've got a pressure washer, so would it be worth blasting it with that? I'm just a bit concerned with all the electrics under the bonnet.

Thanks

Paul

Pressure washer maybe a bit to much, I use Gunk engine degreaser with a stiff brush then wash off using a garden hose.

You can buy Gunk in Halfords and other motor factors.

Apparently he’s got some cleaner to do the job.

Here’s some more pics underneath.

Could be leaking from the oil sump too. The problem is the car had done 1000 miles in 2 years and then sat in storage. I’m not surprised the seals have gone.
