Re: speedo needle flickering
This problem has come up on motorcycle related sites.
Usually some stiffness somewhere in the drive cable. Lubricate the cable or fit a new one.

It’s cable driven so check the routing of the cable and make sure there is no sharp bends. Check the speedo cable is pushed all the way in at the back of the instruments, you may be able to get to the back of the instruments from below if you remove the cover above the pedal, I’ve not got a Mk2 so not sure if you can reach, you can in a Mk1 Scirocco and Mk1 Golf.
If you do remove the speedo cable from the gearbox end be very careful of the plastic drive cog on the end of the cable as it’s really easy for the cog to fall off into the gearbox then you are in trouble if you can’t get it out…

Re: speedo needle flickering
Just go carefully behind the instruments cluster as the wires etc are all getting old and you don’t want to damage anything, might be best to disconnect the earth lead from the car battery as well?

Re: speedo needle flickering
What did you do?
Fit a new cable or just push the old cable into the back of the cluster a bit more?
