So after the MOT advisory on the offside outer CV boot I had a quick look and sure enough, they are generally in a worse state than the shocks were. Not surprising after 39 years service.
I had an idea in my head that the driveshafts for an auto box are different lengths than for a manual. But could I find reference to lengths or CV joint size? Haynes is next to useless on this one.
7Zap.com lists several part numbers, but just the right side for an auto. Not both.
Anyway, had a chat with Mark over at Classic VW, very helpful chap. He asked me what diameter the CV joint was? Err, hang on, will have to call back when I've measured it. Several days later after sourcing an 8mm splined driver and extension plus a ball splitter for the tie rod end, I called him back.
It's a 90mm joint and 560mm total length for the guest side. 20mm more than the standard manual gearbox.
As a side note, I'm sure there should be some grease packed in there, and a gasket?
I have tried in vein to find these anywhere else. Yes, I could just change the split boot. But I have clean(ish) OCD. Who knows what state the joints are in too. Anyway, Mark says he'll order a set for me.
As you can see, seen better days... not to mention that original wishbone, messing with my OCD big time!!

My 83 auto GL has 92k on the clock and the running gear is not nearly as bad as this. I’ve got CDO which is OCD spelt properly so I know what you mean when you say parts have seen better days.
I’ll be tearing out the 1.6 FR engine and auto box complete in the next couple of months if you’re interested in collecting spares for the future?

Yep, even though she's a low miler at 51k they are pretty crusty. Thankfully all the bodywork is solid.
So, are you breaking the Papyrus Green GL Auto or shoehorning in something else?
I'd certainly entertain any spares you may end up with. In particular the auto box itself just in case and because of the rarity these days. Not the engine though as spares still plentiful.

I’m swapping for a manual box and 16valve engine. I’ll drop you a line when it’s all out.
The 1.6 FR engine along with the Pierburg 2B5 carb are quite rare beasts now.
