Sad Rev Counter

The rev counter on my Mk 2 Scala is not well. Sometimes it tries to behave but mostly sits at zero. The occasional flicker suggests it is not quite dead yet.

Are the any tests I can do to check through? I want to check that it is not the wiring from the coil or the wiring tracks on the back of the clock pod? Nothing else is affected so I am assuming earthing is not a problem.

If it is the unit itself, are they easy to come by?

Is the thin brown wire earth cable attached to the rocker cover on the engine, near the thicker earth lead from the coil bracket?

Clean the connections on the coil.

I have done some digging and found the problem. I have a broken track on the printed plastic at the back of the clocks. Next question.... where can I get a replacement circuit thingy or a replacement set of clocks?

The part numbers on the clock are 533919035CM or 533919059E. I can't find a printed part number on the circuit foil itself.

Hopefully someone may have a printed circuit or clocks on eBay. If not I would carefully remove the circuit from the clocks and repair. I successfully managed to replace the digital clock by removing the circuit very carefully. Bit fiddly but the Haynes manual was of some help.

I’d look at revealing the tracks either side of the break. Having sourced a conductive material like some kind of copper foil to bridge the break. Then I’d either brush several layers of flexible insulation material over the repair, or seal with a thin piece of flexible plastic. The tracks will be fragile but if you’re gentle it could be done.

I fixed it. It might be temporary or permanently temporary, depending if I can ever get a replacement set of clocks.

Not a bad fix to be honest. You do see clocks come up every now and then. Worth putting a saved search on eBay and keeping an eye out for people breaking cars
