Scirocco Register

So as the title says im having some trouble, i finally got my scirocco through an MOT, taxed and insured.. only to find when i have taken it out it stalls/dies while im driving and then struggling to start up after, or it will start up revs go right up for a couple of seconds and then dies.

I have adjusted the carburettor from the first time it happened and still happened again.

Engine is a 1.8 8v, weber carb, its had new fuel pipes, fuel pump, swirl pot, battery, alternator + belt, spark plugs, filters, oil, coolant.

Im now thinking that the carburettor is being starved of fuel somehow? Maybe jets?

Any help would be appreciated.

Could be an air leak messing the mix up. Check all the gaskets / rubbers on the intake system

I have put new gaskets on the intake to engine and intake to carburettor, but i will double check my bolts tomorrow, but im pretty sure i tightened them up [emoji848]

I'm having same issue on gtx mate... I am replacing external fuel pump and internal fuel pump and ignition switch .. hopefully solves the problem .

Its so frustrating,
ive been reading on some old posts on this forum and someone has mentioned his car doing the same and replacing the ignition coils and it worked so thats my next plan to see if that sorts it

Is it stalling when hot or cold, idling or under load?

When its hot and when under load or like last night trying to pull away out of a junction

So only when you're giving it some welly? Perhaps a problem with fuel supply, maybe to the second stage throttle?

Fuel Pump, if new check the plastic gasket behind it to ensure it has no leaks.

Fuel pipes, did you replace all? Are they the correct thickness. Were all replaced as it could be a pipe collapsing or closing under pressure preventing fuel going to the carb.

HT leads? Start your car at night and get a friend to rev the engine highly while you look at the engine with the bonnet open. Are your leads arcing.

If I had a carb model again I would start from the fuel filler neck and work my way to the carb. The only way to check the fuel neck is to actually take it off. Do not go with a visual inspection of it attached to the car.

Is there any dirt in your fuel filter?

Try and restrict the fuel return pipe form the carb as sometimes the Webber carb seems to suffer from to much petrol going back to the tank.

Kink the rubber return pipe and see if that helps, cable tie will work, if it does un-kink the pipe get a welding tip and put it in the fuel pipe as it will limit the amount of fuel going back to the fuel tank..

If you google restrict fuel line Webber carb you should find a thread on here explaining it..

Did you check/replace the rubber carb flange gasket as they can split.

Do you have the metal support for the air box fixed to the rocker cover as without it the carb can wobble about...

I had exactly this and a lumpy tickover - further to a suggestion I found on here discovered there was a cracked & slightly loose vacuum pipe - replaced it and fixed it immediately.

For a couple of quid it's worth a try
