Scirocco Register

Is the drive/altornator belt easy to re-place?
Mk2 scirocco gt2, no p.a.s no ac.
Is it as simple as loosening the alternator and slipping it on?

Yeah, one of the simplest jobs you can do.

1. Loosen the allen bolt which holds the alternator in (Not usually necessary tbh).
2. loosen the 13mm bolt at the top of the bracket.
3. Then turn the 17mm castle like nut (Held captive by the 13mm) to slacken the tension on the belt.
4. Whip the belt off, put the new one on, tighten the belt up (I tend to tighten it so I can twist it 90 degrees and no more)
5. Tighten the 13mm and the allen bolt.

If you over tighten the belt you'll prematurely wear the bearings in the alternator and the water pump, too loose and it could slip at high revs...Have a feel of how tight the belt currently is if you're unsure.

950x10 belt is the size you want.

I find you need to re-tension the new belt after a 100 miles or so as it stretches.

To check the tension is right use just your index finger and 1/2 between the alternator and lower crank pully you should be able to press/move the belt 10mm, you should not need to press really hard to move the belt.

Have a feel how the old one feels and go from there.

Might be worth getting a Haynes manual as all the info etc is in there and if you want to attempt more servicing etc but we are always here as well to help.

The red Mk2 Scirocco manual is the best one to get.

Sorted thanks guys! One last question, bit of a 'wizzing' sound is this normal on a new belt or have i tightened it to much? Can twist 90° tho

Might be to tight, try loosening it a touch and see if it goes.
If it's to lose and you start the car turn on headlights/full beam, fan blowers full, heated rear screen and rev the car it will squeal.

Gives you an idea.

Like mark says trial and error,twist works, but I find depends on ambient temp. Give a go then make adjustments,belt will last few years so may aswell take 5mins on it

also buy a decent belt like gates or continental
cheap belts just dont seem to last as long
