Scirocco Register

Hi all,

So I have a 1.8 8v carb mk2 scirocco and am looking at a 2.0 16v ABF engine to replace it in the near future. Is this an easy enough swap? What parts will I need to change (not on the engine itself) in order to accomodate? Electrical? Fuel? Etc

Any help is more than appreciated as I am useless with engines!

I’ve not done it but I believe it will be easier if you ditch the fuel injection and go for carbs on the engine but not 100% sure on that.

Lots of 16v engine conversion done in Scirocco and Mk1 Golfs so there will be a world of info out there.

Your problem is fuel supply. A simple electric facet pump with a combined filter/pressure regulator is enough for a carb/bike carb system but it gets more complicated to supply a fuel injected system.

There are various ways to do this - with/without factory parts but you will generally need a lift pump, swirl pot and main pump.

An alternative is to modify the fuel tank to take a modern mk3/mk4 fuel pump - then nothing else is required.

I wouldn’t mind running fuel injection but have no clue when it comes to electrical and I would need a stand alone management system as far as I know?

The standard ABF ECU injectors/coil pack etc is easiest enough to wire in so you wouldn't need SEM.

On a carb there is no "fuelling system" per se - just two pipes sticking into the tank through the sender unit. You'll need to attach the supply pipe to an electric aftermarket pump - usually a Facet - this should be mounted near the tank but I know some have mounted in engine bay and it has worked.

You'll then need a filter and an adjustable pressure regulator - combined units are better - see Filter King/Malpassi.

Fuelling is the easy bit - you'll also need something to control the distributor timing. There are various options for this as well - using aftermarket like "Nodiz", using the ECU/wiring from a mk2 16v Golf (KR) or even using another marque's distributor - I think some Peugeots have one you can use.

Have a search for mk1 Golf on ABF/KR/ Carbs as it will be exactly the same.

its ironic you say this as i wired in my own abf and it letteraly is about 11 wires and you have 150bhp right out of the box with the standard management.
putting webers on it would be more difficult and cost a whole lot more.
the engine goes in easily with the O2O gearbox but it may well knock on the bonnet so watch out for that.

i will do a right up at some point on how to wire one in but i cant upload pics since the tinypic uploader went off the forum.

A couple of pics from when I got my twin 40s, prior to clean up.

Made a start on tidying them up, this was back at the tail end of March, not much been done since

Slow progress seems to be the theme of this build.

Latest spur of energy into the project has been finishing up the carbs as well as buying the correct manifold.
