Went to get some wine to watch the footie last night.

On the way back i stopped at a pedestrian crossing and the engine died as i went to pull away.

There were clicking noises and an obvious loss of power.

A couple of kind guys pushed me in to the side of the road and i gave the key another turn nothing happened at first and then the engine caught and promptly died. i tried again and everything was back to normal and i traveled the 3 quarters of a mile home without incident.

it's a 92 Scala injection.

Any ideas chaps?

ta much

My first CL did this years ago, turned out to be . ... The ignition module under the rain tray in the scuttle area worth a look, loose/dirty connections.

Worth having a spare in case.

Do you have a lot of keys attached to your ignition key?

The ignition switch can fail, try wobbling your keys and see if that makes any difference.

loose battery terminals? watch out ESPECIALLY for the little red cable on the positive clamp that feeds the fusebox.
somehow my clamp was tight but this particular cable was loose and would cause the car to cut out randomly

When the car cut out did the dash lights (leds that light up when ignition in position 2) come on straight away or was everything dead?

Hi and thanks for all the help.

Pretty sure it's not the ignition switch as i've had that twice before and the engine kept running when they failed.

I've tried to remember and i think when i turned the key i got clicking sounds and everything went off.

i think the dash lights came back on again when i released the key..

Drove to the supermarket on Saturday, a 3 mile round trip, and it started 1st turn and everything was fine.

Booked in to the garage next week.

ta again

"Could be a warning shot from the starter"

could that cause all the power to go when the engine was already running?

thanks

The stock earth cable is pretty rubbish on these cars and with age the exposed wire starts to break down, the earthing point on the body near the battery may need a clean and the rubbish design of earthing the engine on the gearbox mount is not great, may be worth undoing that and cleaning it up. Mk2 and Mk3 Golfs had a better design as the earth cable is fixed to a bolt on the gearbox housing to the engine block so you could run another cable from the gearbox mount to the gearbox housing...

I would suspect the ignition module (in the scuttle area) or the injection pump relay. Both are relatively cheap and very easy to change.
