3000 rpm rattle

Pretty sure this is a pointless post.
However..
My mk2 has a strange rattle from somewhere under the dash at about 3000 rpm.
I have poked and prodded all i can whilst the car is still in one piece to try and stop the rattle but to no avail..
Anybody had and solved this?
I am thinking my only solution is to start taking the dash apart and continue with the poking and prodding until my car isn't a car anymore and is just a pile of bits, an engine and a rattle.

Hi, The speedo cable makes some odd noises--mine drove me nuts for ages ,checked everthing inc driveshaft, wheel bearing etc and finally found that the speedo was jumping slightly in sympathy with the noise. Dissconnected cable at the gearbox and peace and quiet--result! Shoved a lot of thickish oil down the cable and its quiet. Check the instrument clock fixings they can rattle at certain revs so can the flaps on the ventilation system--if the foam has rotted away they can rattle like you wouldn`t believe. The rear view mirror is another favourite for rattling at certain revs. After owning rocco`s for 21 years I have been tracing noises on a regular basis as I like a quiet car.
Good luck
Gerry

'Nothing that a louder exhaust wouldn't cure' as we used to say in the old days!

I got a post it note and stuck it on the back of the face off part then folded over the flappy bit of paper a couple of times to "bulk it out" and the rattle has stopped.

Hi James,
I noted your post re the heat shield on youe downpipe but the M.O.T. is changing this month and they are really tightening up on loads of things.
I am afraid that heat shields on exhausts are one of them--If one should be fitted then it must be there and secure. I read the M.O.T. manual on the .GOV site regarding the changes and they have gone really mad with some of the changes. Things like engine oil / transmission oil leaks can cause an M.O.T. failure due to "enviromental harm" but antifreeze/coolant leaks will not fail. Antifreeze/coolant leaks cause more cat deaths that oil leaking. They are getting tough on diesels--DPF,EGR deleted/cat bypassed etc will cause failure--the mk4/mk5/mk6 golf guys will be getting a suprise when their cars fail as the emission controls are popular mod on these cars. Time will tell--will be watching the posts on the VW golf forums.
Best Wishes
Gerry

How many testers know that our Sciroccos should have a heat shield?

mine does--he knows roccos inside out--rang me up when took car in for first test after fitting easy steer power steering--he has been testing cars for 30 years that I know of and nothing gets past him.

Mine was recently put back, after some tank and fuel pump work. Now I have full on rattles at around 900 rpm. Idle basically. Goes away once I crank it up. I need to get the car on a lift and then hang my bodyweight off the back box until the mounting posts on the box bend a little away from the shield ::)
