Fuel Filler Cap

Had a new fuel filler neck installed recently that I got from a very helpful guy on this forum. Only problem is, the old fuel filler cap doesn't fit. Seems the opening on the new neck is too tight! The various ones I've found at Euro Car Parts and Halfords are no good either. Anyone got any ideas? I'm stuck with a slowly disintegrating temporary cap for now.

Thanks!

Who was it that you got it from? probably worth reaching out to them directly and seeing what they advise.

User BlackGTX. I've sent him a message. Just wondering if anyone else has a tip?

Cheers.

Have you tried lubricating the black rubber seal on the underside of the cap?

Do you have a picture of the end of the new filler neck?

Strangely on the petrol cap front. I cant get one to fit, the filler neck on mine seems far over to the left side of the filler area at an angle. The ones Ive bought dont fit in a month of Sundays.

Is it a stainless steel one?
The early batches of those that were floating around years ago, like one I’ve got, used an Astra mk2 cap for some reason.

Is yours new? My old one was a modified mk1 golf neck and it sat over to one side.

To be fair Im not sure. I bought it early last year from a man in Manchester. I dont think he or the owner before him did anything to it. So to be honest I havent got a clue.

i think its where the tang that locks into the filler neck that causes the issue as well.
i seem to remember using a dremel to sand the tang down a bit to fit properly.
i think crusty has a bmw filler cap from an e36.

Trying a mk1 Golf cap I found on eBay. Will report if it's any good or not.

The problem I seem to be having with mine is that there are two flanges inside the neck at the bayonet fitting locks against. These flanges stick out too much for most caps I've found so far so the locking pins on the cap can't get behind them. Shaving them down would likely fix the issue, but there's no way I'm trying that with it still attached to the car, and I don't have the tools to take it off myself.
