Scirocco Register

The original speakers in my 1988 MkII have finally gone, and I want to replace them.

I'm thinking I'll probably need a subwoofer in the boot to handle the bass. Has anybody fitted one of these? If so, what would you recommend buying and how did you fit it?

to replace the 6x4 speakers alpine do a staright replacement which should fit ok behind the origenal grills.

as far as subs go its pretty easy to wire in a kit.
i ran all my wires inside the car under the carpet on the left hand side exept for the rca leads which i ran under the carpet next to the transmission tunnel as its best to keep those wires away from power wires to reduce interfearance.
i really dont know anythin gabout subs anymore but what i have is an old performance sub made yonks ago that works superb (its on its second enclosure as it has a habbit of destroying them) i coupled that with an inphase amp that was on sale that seems to have just as much RMS power as my old pyramid amp

it kicks more than enough for what i need so i really depends on how you want it to sound.
i will admit mine is lacking midrange but i tend to listen to liquid d&b which is all treble and bass so you dont notice.

Lots of different deals out there for subs, you can buy kits with everything you need, I bought a kenwood kit years ago and fitted the amp to the back of the speaker box so it's an all in 1 unit.

You can now get subs which fit underneath your seats etc so lots to chose from depending on your budget.

You need to check your car radio has sub outlets and a control switch to turn the amp on, I had to use my electric aerial trigger wire (blue wire) to get my amp to switch on, you can get a earth to the amp from the boot/rear lights so you only need to get power, music signal and remote switching to turn the amp on to run through the car.

I have a set of the 6x4 Alpines in the link from james, nice sound for the money but they do lack bass, so that's why I fitted a sub.

As Mark said above, your going to lack bass in any form of 6x4/6x9 or anything.

Best result you’d want separate component speakers but you wouldn’t be able to do this without modification to the doors.

I’d recommend what the guys above are saying with 6x4 doors and a sub in the boot. I’m running a full inphase set up which are a fairly cheap brand but not highly known quite impressed with them if I’m honest.

I’m also running a 10 band eq which I can’t recommend enough but it depends how much your into your music I guess.

What do you guys use as your earthing point in the boot? I couldn't find anything good a while back when I set up a sub

Not having a Mk2 Scirocco I’m not 100% sure what earths are in the boot but in my Mk1 Golf cabriolet there was an earth point/bolt underneath the passengers side light where lights are earthed?

There's an earth point on the strengthener below boot latch, in the centre between the rear lights. I think there's another one very close to the rear washer bottle too.

On mine I needed a few due to keeping cable runs as short as possible.
The 2 mentioned above are indeed there. One between the rear lights in the middle of the boot, one washer bottle side, one the other side and I also put one in on the strengthening bracket for the parcel shelf support. Near the rear strut mounts.

To be honest you can use anywhere you want as long as it’s pretty substantial, and you clean the pain off to allow a good connection.
