I'm currently doing an auto to manual conversion with an 020 5 speed box from a late cabby.
I also have the drive shafts which have 100mm inner cups. Both the boots were torn so I figured I may as well replace the outer CVs while it's easy. I do can a couple of new CVs I got on sale last year, but they're slightly smaller in length. Spines on the inside and out both match up.
I'm saying this is fine, and as the car is a far bit lower now it can loose 1cm. (Originals from the mk1 cabby are 140mm and the new one is 130mm)
What do you reckon?
Using a 90mm outer CV in place of a 100mm

Which engine are you running? Non GTI's earlier on had 90mm joints.
I can't see it being a problem with being lowered as well.
It may be just the different manufacturer, but the splines on the 90mm don't appear to be machined the same as the 100mm where they would sit against the wheel bearing.

Re: Using a 90mm outer CV in place of a 100mm
Nether CV is off my car. But it's currently a 1.8 EX
Looking at ECP and they seem to offer both Outers for every A1 chassis car I enter in is offered both a 129mm (Length) cv and a 139mm one.
I thought that all 5 speeds would have the 100mm inner and the 81mm outer
Inner CV flange 100mm
Outer CV;
90mm = 139mm length
81mm = 129mm Length
Just unsure why all motor factors offer the 81mm for all cars I enter. (Of course their databases are never too reliable)
Don't want to put the old 90mm ones back on so I think i'm going to go with the new 81mm ones I have

Re: Using a 90mm outer CV in place of a 100mm
I've decided to just rebuild my 90mm outers. The actual axle shaft for the larger (100mm inner) shafts are a fair bit bigger in diameter and the 81mm boots would not fit on which is a fair indication they're not intended to be used on them.
Couple of brand new 81mm outer CVs for sale now it seems.

Fair enough, sounds like a plan :)
