Im ordering a few bits for my mot and vw heritage list several alternatives. Mine is a '91 scala 1.8i DX. Does anyone know what cv joints were fitted to these or are they right that i'll have to measure them? I dont really want to go through the hassle of getting the car out of the garage to strip it down, just to put it back together again and wait for bits to arrive.

Also I'm going to do the clutch and some seals and thought i might change the cable at the same time as i dont know when it was done last. pretty sure ive not done it since ive had it. They list a couple of lengths and said its got an auto adjuster on it. I thought they were manual adjust on those.

And finally they have a clutch relese bearing for it (020141165B ). Is this needed/fitted to those? I was going to get this clutch https://www.vwheritage.com/027198141a-1 ... t-vw-spare

Inner or outer CV joints?

If outer, get SKF part VKJA 3006 - really no point getting cheaper brands. Outer CVs are the same on all injected Scirocco and mk2 Golf from mid-84 onwards. Quite why GSF/ECP/VWH etc list loads is beyond me.

If you need all four CVs then consider getting complete driveshafts - I got my SKF ones for around £160 which was actually less than the individual CVs. The plus side of buying complete is you can then flog your old ones to mk1 Golf/Caddy owners who need them for engine conversions.

Clutch cable is manual adjust (Golf/Jetta was auto=adjust) but I think the correct length one is long since obsolete.

The Sachs is the best clutch kit for the money - although maybe not from VWH. You can find it a lot cheaper elsewhere.

sorry i did mean outer but was concidering doing outer as well so i know where i stand with them. I will look elsewhere as a quick search has obviously revieled vwh to have rather inflated prices. Didnt realise there would be a market for the old ones so good shout, I'll change them complete. A lot less messy too! Where did you find yours? Ive seen them on buycarparts not as low as £160 but still reasonable. They have the sachs clutch kit too for around £30 less

What’s wrong with the old CV joints, are they knocking?

I’m still on my original CV joints in my daily drive Mk1 Golf cabriolet and that’s covered 290,000 miles, replaced lots of outer CV boots in the 25 years of owning the car...

I say “if it aint broke dont fix it”

Clutch cable is manual adjustment, with the new cable hang it up and pour some 3in1 oil down the inner cable so it drips out of the end, this keeps the cable nice and free.
If you don’t have a bulk head strengthening plate for the clutch cable get/make one as soon as possible as it’s a common problem for the cable to pull through the bulk head.

All later cars have 100mm CV joints

Yeah 1 is knocking quite bad. My theory if one side is gone the other won’t be far behind. Now I’ve looked at it time and price wise it makes sense to do the complete shafts.

Thanks for the advise of the strengthening plate, make sure to do that. I’ve seen talk of the South African convention. Is that to combat pulling through the bulkhead?

That's the plate, it does need to be trimmed a little to fit a Mk2 Scirocco as the Mk1 golf bulk head is slightly different.
It's got a sticky pad on the back so it's just a case of remove clutch cable from the pedal end and push it back through the bulk head, get the plate the right size then clean the bulk head and stick the plate on, fit the clutch cable back on to the pedal and I find a little grease on the rubber bush fitted to the bulk head helps fit the bush, I also get the bush some where near and then press the clutch pedal to pull the bush into place.

You will need to readjust the free play in the cable, about 10mm free play in the pedal is what you want.

The other method is get some sheet metal and make/cut your own plate.

Ebay have a few for sale.

GSF used to sell them as well.
