Hi everyone I have a rat look scirocco mk2 that I use daily. I bought it as a non runner In January 2016 it had been off the road since 1999.
This is what it looked like when I first got it -
I bought it for £300 off someone who was going to banger race it. Lucky it needed to much work to get it running so they sold it to me.
The car turned over and would run on easy start but the carb was goosed and the fuel tank was full of rust and petrol that was nearly as old as me. I replaced many parts to get it running and road worthy the list is pretty big.
New fuel tank, sender unit, fuel filler neck, lift pump, timing belt, cam and crank seals, fan belt, bottom pulley, spark plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor, I got a second hand pooburg carby(I later on changed it for a Webber).
I got it running but I also had trouble on the coolant side of things first of all there was a core plug missing on the back of the engine. the one on the inlet manifold had a hole in it the header tank had a crack in it and the water pump had a wobbly bearing. So I fixed all of the above.
I then concentrated on getting it to stop so I put new discs and pads on the front along with new flexis and copper brake pipes and took the drums off the rear and all was good just needed a little adjustment and new wheel bearings.
I also had a lot of electrical problems like the wipers not working, heater blower not working, screenwah pump, lights and indicators needed going through, clean some earths and change a few bulbs, relays and fuses pretty standard stuff for a car that had been abandoned for 17 years.
There are some other stuff that I've forgotten about and stuff like exhaust centre section, battery, wipers, oil and filters and tyres etc
After a few months I got it mot'ed and was driving it daily. One thing I did notice that wasn't working once I started driving it was the odometer. It's stuck on a 186k so god knows how many miles this thing has done.
Now here are some more recent pictures-
My plan with this car is to use it daily. Get some coilovers and maybe some nicer wheels and go to a few meets this summer. I'm going to use it until the mot runs out in October then I'm going to keep it in my unit and swap the engine for a tdi lump.
