Making sure you get the right part -

The only guaranteed way to get the right part is to start with the VW part number. VW have a parts system called ETKA. This used to be readily available "unofficially" on ebay but VW have made it harder and harder to obtain/load on your own computer. Various websites have popped over the years with this catalogue available online. The current one is :

http://www.oemepc.com

but this has started some intrusive advertising of late so I don't know how long it will be around.

For aftermarket parts brands like Hella, Bosch, Febi, Sachs etc the magic word is "ecat", short for e-catalogue. Type in any manufacturer followed by ecat and you will enter a magical realm of quality parts availability. Once you armed with the manufacturers part number you can search that and find the best price.

Here are the ones I have bookmarked - a lot of these will give you the equivalent VW part number too

Sachs/Lemforder (clutch+suspension)- https://webcat.zf.com

SKF (bearings) - http://ows-cdn.tecdoc.net/skf/home.jsp? ... 4a94f205fa

Contitech (belts) http://aam-europe.contitech.de/pages/we ... _en.cshtml

https://www.hella.com/hella-tech-world-uk-en/index.html (this one requires registering and maybe being creative with the truth)

There are loads more - NGK, Gates etc etc. So there really is no excuse for getting the wrong part!
