Hey guys,

I'm after a new fuel pump for the scala as it decided to give up today after playing up for quite a while.
Anyone know which it is and where I can source one from?

If injection there are two pumps - a lift pump and a main pump.

The usual suspects - GSF and ECP - should stock them.

Also try Classic-vw.co.uk - enthusiast run and very reliable. Both pumps on this page -

It's injection, joy that sounds fun lol. Thinking of doing both in that case as I have no idea which has failed although I think it's the one under the rear bench.
Do you know which I need or part numbers?

Just done some more googling do you know if the following would be the correct lift pump?

My plan is to start with that as it's a lot cheaper than the main pump and it's also what I suspect to be the issue.

If the lift pump has failed the car will still run but loses power/fuel if the drive it hard and the main pump under the car gets a lot louder.
If the car starts, try unplugging the electrical connector to the fuel tank, if no different in noise then the lift pump is dead.

When fitting the new lift pump replace the rubber fuel hose between the pump and sender as they disintegrate over time, make sure it's the same length or the pump will sit to low or high in the tank and if it's the original pump you will need 2 new fuel type jubilee clips as they are the use once crush type from VW.

Main pump is a lot tricker to change as the pipes, clips and connections go rusty over time underneath the car. I've done it once in the winter outside and not the sort of job I would want to do again in a hurry. Plenty of socking in Plusgas is needed.

Edit... yes that's the lift pump, plenty on eBay as well, search Mk1 golf as well, cabriolet uses the same pump, lift and main pump.

Ah well if doesn't even start anymore, sometimes it will fire but doesn't continue to run but most of the time it just turns over... would you say this is the main pump then?

Have you checked the fuse and relay?

Both very common problems

I haven't directly, I multi metered the lift pump and that worked correctly with 12v once igg on.

The reason I've presumed the pump was originally it was running but if rev'Ed the engine died.
But it went from that to not even starting :-/

Trying to decide on the best way of attacking it.. probably check the relays next but I'm sure the lift one works as it get voltage.

This just sounds like it going to be a nightmare lol

Take out the fuel pump relay and the relay directly below it, take the relay below and put it where the fuel pump relay lives, you need to turn the relay to get it to fit and this will make the fuel pump run when you turn the ignition on to position 2, dash lights on and engine not running. Try staring the car....

Other way is remove fuel pump relay, get a chunky bit of wire and put in where to 2 bigger connectors are and the fuel pump will run even if the keys aren't in the ignition ! Be carful doing this way as the pump runs all the time, good way to get the car running if stuck at the side of the road with a faulty pump relay as I've got home a couple times this way...

No problem and always happy to help, my advice may not work but at least it gives you some options to try.

You should be able to hear the main pump when you switch on the ignition and if you can't thats probably where the problem lies?

I'm on my 3rd or 4th relay in 10 years and as ever Mark gives an excellent guide.

Always remember the old acronym KISS keep it simple stupid, start with the simple stuff.

Yeah defo going to be the first port of call, I'll give it a go tomorrow fingers crossed that's the problem

FYI....
The fuel pump does not always run when you turn the ignition on, it all depends on what relay you have fitted.
I have a VW no62 relay fitted to my Mk1 Golf and that does not prime the fuel pump when I turn the ignition on and it's meant to be like that.
The aftermarket one I fitted sometime ago did prime the pump before starting the car.

You are right again haha it's a no62 and once swapped with 18 it runs perfectly!

I also did a bench test on the relay and it's only partly failed. It still triggers with voltage but once it starts passing a decent current it shuts off again almost immediately.
Relay shopping it is!
